Did you have an opportunity to visit Part I? Sure hope so – our quilt show this past weekend had many lovely entries on display. For your viewing today are some of the quilts that received special recognition. There are also images from our Bed Turning which is always a favorite for our visitors. At each show, a theme is created. All the quilts might relate to red and green, all applique, all antique, all log cabin, etc. The quilts are layered on a bed, complete with mattress and headboard. Each quilt is displayed and a brief synopsis is given. It might be a story about how or why the quilt was created; if antique, any provenance that is available, etc. For 2009, the quilts are all previous blue ribbon winners and are as recent as our 2007 show or back to the 1980´s. You are invited to visit the website for our guild, Pine Tree Quilters, where there is a slide show of quilts. There are additional photos which show the entire quilt in a better light then the one’s posted here. It was fun to see how technology has revolutionized events such as this…every size, shape and make of digital camera and all kinds of cell phone camera features being used.
Let’s start off with an elegant appliqued piece which took the Quilt Show Chairperson’s Ribbon

Viewer’s Choice – this quilt features timeless red and green applique on 6″ blocks. It is handquilted.

Best of Show – Cinnamon Star – completely machine quilted on a standard home sewing machine. This quilt laid beautifully – flat. Because of the darker background, it was difficult to photograph the machine work detailing.

The Popular Bed Turning – all the following quilts have won a blue ribbon in previous years. There were about 22 presented.

These red and green appliqued blocks are antique and were set into current fabric. The red sashing was washed a number of times to match the red in the applique. Hand quilted
Another red and green applique – 6″ blocks with a striking print sashing. This quilt was duplicated for our 1999 Raffle Quilt – 99 blocks for the year ’99.

Lone Star – made with Rising Sun reproduction fabrics from the Smithsonian Collection – appliqued inset corners and triangles.

A rich black and cream combination featuring fine embroidery and a dramatic toile border. The quilt maker proudly holds one edge!

Grandmother’s Fan with embellishments – a remarkable joint effort for a mother and daughter.

By the same mother-daughter team!

And one more!

These are 2 of the quilts which were on display in the Bed Turning area – Blue Ribbon winners all…

The “Lovabel” quilt – made from a grouping of patterns which were available from The Rainbow Quilt Company in the 1930′s. Laurene Sinema, who owned the Quilted Apple in Phoenix, met Lovabel Martin in the 1990′s and was so interested in Lovabel’s quilt that they arranged to have the patterns reproduced and made available to quilters, hence the name “Lovabel’s Quilt.” This design was our 2001 Raffle Quilt. And a group of us met for a number of months to make our own also. I made mine for my Mom & Dad. This particular quilt in the photo belongs to one of our guild members. Hand appliqued, embroidered and hand quilted.

The last image is of the Ground Zero quilt by Lois Jarvis – it was on display by the front entrance to the show all weekend…visitors would be coming through the door, thinking about all the quilts and vendors and then when we directed their attention to what the quilt was about, they would come to a complete halt and just stare. It was a very emotional display and touched everyone. It has been 8 years since 9-11 and when you look at each of the individual diamonds and see the faces of those who were lost at the World Trade Center, it is as though it happened moments ago…

That concludes our 2009 Quilt Show – The members worked hard to make it a success and preliminary ideas and plans are all ready being discussed for 2011! Thank you so much for visiting and don’t forget to drop by our website for more photos.
Until next time…
Always take time to stitch…
Pat
